General Information Across Pern, there exists the Crafthalls. Each Craft is dedicated to a certain field but they all follow the same general progression. A distinction should be drawn between the Hold-crafts and the Hall-crafts. Several Crafts, while having their own Halls and places of learning, are basic skills that no Hold can do without. Examples include the Farmercraft, Cookingcraft, and Beastcraft (or Herdcraft). These Hold-crafts are therefore found everywhere, and their life does not primarily revolve around their home Halls. In contrast, crafts such as the Minercraft, Smithcraft, or Healercraft require specific locations, specialized halls, and years of learning to master. Unlike the Hold-crafts, these Crafts stand somewhat aloof from the regular day-to-day life of the Holds of Pern. Because of this, only Hall-Crafts will be listed here for informaiton. However, Cepju does have a separate learning system that is not recognized by most of the Crafthalls. While someone may leave Cepju as a Journeyman, they would have to undergo special testing at the Crafthall itself to determine the level of knowledge they have gained outside the Hall. Cepju follows a true Master to Apprentice type of training and each will be listed on the individual post regarding a specific craft. Generally, someone becomes an Apprentice at the age of 8 to 10 Turns. Journeyman is usually within 5 to 10 turns after Apprenticing. Master can be achieved by roughly 10 to 15 Turns after walking the tables to Journeyman, generally it is much later then that. Within the ranks of Apprentice and Journeyman, there are Junior and Senior ranks but those are merely by who has been there the longest and not dependent on skill. Other Crafts There are other crafts that are recognized on Pern but not listed here. Among those are Runners, Traders and Pillow-Crafters. Runners do not require a Hall for training but they are recognized as a craft on Pern. They travel between Holds on specifically labelled paths to deliver messages. No one other then a Runner may use these Paths. Traders are a whole other ballgame. They are as vitally important to Pern as People are. Traders carry news from one place to another. They also bring trade from Hold to Hold. Once every couple of Turns, the Master Trader will get together with the Lord Holders and Master Crafters to decide the actual value of a Mark. Pillow-Crafters are a unique sort. They are literally employed in Humankind's oldest profession. They get their name for all the time they usually spend on pillows. There are a variety of other "Crafters" along Pern but the rest that we cover are the common major ones.

Beastcraft While the general term of Beastcraft applies to the entire field of beastcraft, when someone uses the term Beastcraft, they often refer to the specialized breeding of certain animals. Anyone who performs Beastcrafting will have a specialty and know all there is to know about that particular creature. There is a main crafthall for Beastcrafting located in Keroon, this hall specializes in Herbeasts, Runners, canines and the like. In the recent half a century, another Hall has sprung up dedicated to Firelizards and Whers. Beastcrafters are primarily male. There is some bigotry towards women but this is among the older members of the Beastcraft. Beastcraft - General Hall Name: Keroon Crafthold Hall Location: Keroon Hold This is where the majority of students go to train for Beastcrafting. Each Journeyman has a general knowledge of all animals but generally specializes in one (Canine, Bovine, etc). Masters of the Beastcraft are often responsible for protecting and breeding a particular line of beasts. These beasts will often take on the name of the Hold where the Master is stationed but a few have taken on the names of the Master (though this is rare). Beastcrafting is most notable for it's Runners as they have been bred for specific things. Hardier, thicker, animals for Northern use while there are faster Runners for events. For more information about Animals here in Cepju, please check out our Animals page. Beastcraft - Whers and Firelizards Hall Name: Tarquin Crafthold Hall Location: Nerat Hold Tarquin Crafthold mainly deals with Whers but they have taken to caring for Firelizards in the last decade or so. The Whers raised at Tarquin are a joint effort between the Beastcrafters and the Minecrafters due to the usage of the beasts in mines. Wherhandlers are often trained at Tarquin (although they have been trained elsewhere) before bonded to a Wher. This training varies but can take anywhere from a few sevendays to much longer. This training is done to ensure that the Wherhandler can actually handle the Wher. Female Whers require much more training and are rarely given to those that do not pursue Beastcrafting on a full time basis. To see more about Whers in Cepju, please check out our Whers page, and the Tarquin Beasts page. Firelizards work on a similar principle as Whers here in Cepju. Tarquin is a place where they are raised and bred to be far more intelligent and obedient. Tarquin firelizards are generally larger then 'wild stock' due to selective breeding. These firelizards are also generally used as 'working' animals although they are occasionally purchased by Lord Holders or given as extremely prestigious gifts. To see more about Firelizards in Cepju, please check out our Firelizards page, and the Tarquin Beasts page.

Farmcraft Hall Name: Farmer Hall Hall Location: Nerat Hold The Farmcraft is primarily dedicated to the planting and cultivation of plants used for food. While this is considered a 'Hold Craft', those that study at the Farmer Hall do so to help cultivate new plants or perfect new methods of protecting and growing crops. Fairly much everyone on Pern has a knowledge of Farmcraft but those that truly apprentice to it are far more skilled. They are those who have the "green thumbs" on Pern. Farmers are both genders with no bigotry.

Fishcraft Hall Name: Fishercraft Hall Hall Location: Tillek Hold The Fishercraft Hall has a great many uses in Pern. Primarily they are those that engage in Fishing (as the name suggests) but it is also the term used for those who engage in ship building and carting out the shorelines of unknown places. All Sea-Holders engage in some manner of of Fishcrafting. The part of the Fishcraft that deals with the other sections of it are in the same Hall. Fishcrafters are primarily male with high bigotry against women.

Glassscrafting Hall Name: Glass-smith Hall Hall Location: Ista Hold Glass crafting is a highly specialized and is all about the turning of sand into glass. Those who practice the craft can specialize in several different forms of glass crafting but the skill is the same on the basic level. Most usually craft dishes or lens for viewers. Some glass crafters, however, have taken an unusual turn and create tiny figurines. These crafters are rare but are highly prized as their work is often given as prestigious gifts to high ranking Pernese. Glasscrafters are primarily male with high bigotry towards female.

Harpercraft Hall Name: Harper Hall Hall Location: Fort Hold Harpers are the musicians and teachers of the Pernese world. They educate the young about how to behave and what is expected of them. The Harper Hall is considered a bastion of knowledge, and the Hall contains records (called the Archives) of nearly every notable thing on Pern. Harpers are also the spies and diplomats of Pern. A Hold Harper is often employed as the adviser to the current Lord Holder or Master Crafter. Harpers are primarily male with high bigotry towards women.

Healercraft - Humans Hall Name: Healer Hall Hall Location: Fort Hold Healers are always in high demand across Pern. Most Healers possess a general knowledge of all forms of healing but many take specialties in certain fields (children, birth, etc). Healers also have a vast knowledge of herbs. Any one Healer, even at Apprentice level, can tell you what most herbs are good for. Healers are equal on both genders with no bigotry to either. Healercraft - Dragonhealer Located in the same Hall as the Healer Hall, those that practice Dragonhealing have merely taken a specialty in Dragons. This means that they have spent time at Fort Weyr studying with the dragons. Occasionally, they will go to other Weyrs but it is generally the Weyr that the Healer Hall is beholden to. Most Dragonhealers are themselves dragonriders but this is by no means a requirement. For more information about Dragonhealing, check out Goldenlily Dragonhealing but keep in mind our dragons are a little bit different then the ones listed there.

Minecraft Hall Name: Minecraft Hall Hall Location: Crom Hold While there are often quite a few apprentices at the Minecraft Hall, most gain their training at individual Mines. Still, there are a great many things taught within the Hall proper. The Hall is also where people test out new ideas for mining as well as plot out new mines. They also have records for every single Mine Camp and Hold created by the miners. Minecrafting is very important on Pern for the production of coal (used to heat cold stone homes as well as create steel), mining of metal and Firestone. Minecrafters are primarily male with high bigotry towards women.

Smithcraft Hall Name: Smithcraft Hall Hall Location: Telgar Hold Smiths are generally employed to repair and create metal objects for use of all Pernese. Every Smith has general knowledge and complete those tasks. They will generally choose a field that is either in general metal working, gold smithing or silver smithing. It's rare to find someone that has mastered more then one but the same knowledge can be applied from one to another with varying levels of success. The Glasscraft was originally a part of the Smithcraft Hall but branched off to form it's own. There are still a few offshoots of Smithcrafting seeking to find their own acceptance as large crafts (Chemcraft [Creating dyes, fuel for flamethrowers, any chemical mixture used by Pernese], Jewelcraft, Silvercraft, etc) but most are considered part of the Smithcraft Hall. Smithcrafters are primarily male with high bigotry towards women.

Tannercraft Hall Name: Tannercraft Hall Hall Location: Igen Hold Tanners are responsible for the creation of clothing and hide for writing on. They are also responsible for preparing furs for a variety of uses (primarily fine clothing or bed furs). Cloth is not as common on Pern as hide is so there is a high amount of members in this craft. There is also a rivalry between the Weavercraft Hall and the Tannercraft Hall due to the similar nature of their crafts. Tanners are primarily male.

Weavercraft Hall Name: Weavercraft Hall Hall Location: Southern Boll Hold Weavers are the other source of clothing and cloth-like products on Pern. While they are not as numerous as Tanners, cloth is in a high demand and is often quite pricey. The weavercraft is responsible for the cloth used in sails as well as fine cotton clothing. There is a rivalry between the Weavers and the Tanners due to the similar nature of their crafts although a Weaver's products are often priced higher due to the time and effort required to weave the cloth. Weavercrafters are primarily women with no bigotry towards men.

Winecraft Hall Name: Vintner Hall Hall Location: Benden Hold The Winecraft or Vintnercraft is the process of which wine is created. Those that practice this art are quite good at what they do and can create fermented drinks from just about any fruit on Pern. While there are people capable of creating wine all across Pern, Benden Wine is considered the best of the best. Those trained at the Hall have access to all the knowledge, and materials, that the Hall offers. The Hall also has it's own gardens dedicated to any plant, fruit or vegetable that can be used in the process of creating alcoholic beverages. Winecrafters are primarily male with little bigotry towards women.

Woodcraft Hall Name: Woodcraft Hall Hall Location: Keroon Hold A small Hall, this has only recently come about in the last hundred Turns. Woodcrafters primarily create furniture for special occasions. They are also responsible for protecting stands of trees from harm along with carving wood. This Hall only diverged from the Smithcraft Hall after the memory of Thread had faded from the minds of Pernese, and the desire for wooden products grew. Woodcrafters are primarily male with high bigotry towards women.
