Dragons are carnivorous and warm blooded creatures. They possess six limbs, four legs and two wings, and are similar in body shape to horses. They possess two head knobs, similar to those of giraffes, and no visible ears. The Pernese dragon possesses hide and not scales, their hide often being compared to suede. They also give off a spicy but sweet smell when they are clean. The tail ends in a fork (they defecate through an opening between the forks for those curious). Their blood is copper based, making it green in color, and is called ichor by Pernese. The eyes of a dragon are large and multifaceted. The eyes will also change color depending on the mood of the dragon.
Newly hatched dragons are about half the size of your average pernese human, being closer to the size of large Terran dogs and they will reach their full grown size after eighteen months. Young dragons grow so fast that their hides need to be regularly oiled to prevent damage to the young dragon. They also consume a great amount of meat. Despite resembling a horse, a dragon has a great many similarities to a typical house cat. Including a love of sitting in a ray of sunlight.
At Hatching, a Dragon will impress to a Human. During this impression, they will make a psychic link. This link will cause them to share everything with their rider, from emotions to pain. It is said that the Dragon is the other half of a rider's soul and it is impossible to tell where one ends and one begins. All dragons are capable of telepathic speech and will often speak to one another, and firelizards, in this manner. A dragon is also capable of talking to a human other then their rider but they only do so under unusual circumstances.
All dragons are capable of teleporting. They do this by briefly going 'Between'. By remaining between for eight seconds, they can reappear anywhere on Pern with their passengers and anything they were carrying. Between is described as being a black void where the only thing that registers is extreme cold. Dragons will often go Between when they have been attacked by Thread as Thread dies in the cold. To teleport from one location to another, a dragon must have a clear mental image of where they wish to go. Failure to have one will result in the dragon never reappearing. Going Between is also how a dragon dies if it is still capable of doing so.
Dragons are also capable of traveling through time by going Between but the effects of such are often detrimental to the health of the rider. Being in the same time-space as another version of oneself causes severe weakness and psychological disturbances for humans although dragons seem unaffected. The amount of time it takes to travel through time varies on the amount of time being jumped. Please Note: No one has yet to discover Timing It in our time line so this will only be done with prior Admin approval.
Dragons are fully sapient but they are lacking in long-term memory. They are psychologically dependent on their human counterparts and will suicide should their rider die (a gold will remain if she has eggs on the sand however). Humans can survive the death of their dragon but they will often suicide as the death of their dragon results in severe psychological trauma. Dragons will not impress to someone who already has a mental issue or a severe physical malady that would hamper their ability to be a functioning partner (blindness, multiple personalities, etc). Dragons also tend to be fairly calm in temperament. Often being referred to as the rider's better half.
